721 Yuen Long Attack

We received information on the internet that a group of suspected triad members dressed in white in Yuen Long East near Kai Tei with sticks ready to beat people up. These people in white came from the villages in Yuen Long, including the barbecue sites near Nam Sang Wai and Yuen Long West Railway Station. When they arrived at Kai Tei, they started beating people on sight. A chef who had just left work at a restaurant near Kai Tei was surrounded by the group and was seriously injured. Some passersby in Yuen Long called the police, but no one answered the 999 police report center, and no one answered the phone at the Yuen Long Police Station. The police seemed to be missing altogether. The white-clad men went to the Yuen Long West Rail station and beat up everyone, including LegCo member Lam Cheuk-ting. Two police officers arrived, saw the scene and left. The white-clad men went as far as rushing inside the train compartments and launched an indiscriminate attack on scores of people. One young man was seen kneeling down and asked them to stop, but the men in white continued to do so. They were all triad gangsters. They injured more than 30 people, including a pregnant woman and a LegCo member. One of the white-clad men had a heart attack shortly after. The mob attack only stopped when the firefighters and ambulances arrived. It was revealed later on that LegCo member Junius Ho Kwan-yiu was filmed shaking hands with white-clad men who took part in the attack; the riot police was filmed patting the shoulder of the white-clad men in Yuen Long, and the two were smiling, of which the then-Assistant Commissioner of Police Tang Ping-keung denied that the police was in cahoots with the mob.

On that night, some Yuen Long residents went to the Yuen Long Police Station to report the crime but were surprised to find that the main door of the police station was closed. Some went to Tin Shui Wai Police Station, and the situation was the same. Eventually, the police took more than two hours to show up. This is the most shocking incident ever in the history of Hong Kong, with the assailant being members of the triad and the assistance being the police. Hong Kong people have completely lost confidence in the police, and half of the population has zero trust in the police. Hong Kong people realized that they could only rely on themselves.

721 Yuen Long Attack

From this day onwards, some people who used to support the government and the police have cut ties with the police, and the police are no longer law enforcers in the minds of Hong Kong people but are black cops, triad gangsters, disrupters of social peace, and lawbreakers. From this day onwards, Hong Kong people stand on different sides with the police. On top of that, as we know that the men in white were recruited by the LOCPG and invited by Junius Ho Kwan-yiu to beat up the demonstrators; Hongkongers’ dissatisfaction with CCP is going to grow stronger. At the same time, Hongkongers will continue to escalate the confrontation to realise the notion ‘Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our times’.

August 31, 2019 was the 5th anniversary of Occupy Central. The same day five years ago, the National People's Congress announced the ‘831 Decision’, a framework for Hong Kong Chief Executive election by the Central Government. For democrats and citizens fighting for universal suffrage, the decision means a turndown for civil nomination. In less than a month since the 831 decision, Benny Tai, who initiated Occupy Central with Love and Peace, announced the official launch of Occupy Central at the movement base at the government headquarters in Admiralty.

Five years since, at present-day, Hong Kong was in the heat of the Anti-Extradition Movement. On August 31, a protest march led by Civil Human Rights Front was planned but forced to cancel when the police issued a letter of objection. Instead, netizens proposed hanging out in the streets as a way of protest. Crowds of citizens took to the streets in response to the ‘Pray for Sinners’ march proposed by netizens. At night a clash broke out, where the police attacked protesting citizens with water cannon vehicles and tear gas grenades. From Wan Chai in Hong Kong Island to Mong Kok and Prince Edward in Kowloon, riot police shot, tear gas grenades, and captured black protesters. The police had adopted extreme force.

23:00, close to a hundred Special Tactical Squad and riot police officers charged into the train on Platform 4 towards Central, beating protesters with batons and those suspected to be protesters, using pepper spray, and making arrests. Many passengers later described the experience as terrifying, asserting that they were thrashed by the police even if they did nothing to provoke or attack. The platform was in chaos, screams could be heard everywhere. Some passengers huddled and cried after being pepper-sprayed, some shouted for the police to stop attacking. The train then entered Yau Ma Tei station, where many injured got off. The train was trashed, covered with bloody tissues, gauze, and diapers. Riot police drove people away from the platform. Later the station was closed, reporters and first-aiders were thrown out. Outside the station entrance, some first-aiders displayed banners saying ‘Obstructing rescue is against international humanitarian law’, pleading for entrance to treat injuries, but was paid no attention by the police. Three first-aiders in the station were ordered to face the wall and forbidden to give treatment. Some first-aiders were arrested upon identification. After the attack, police inside Prince Edward station demanded reporters and first-aiders to leave, claiming to lock down the crime scene. Ambulances and mobile command units from the fire department arrived, as per rationalizing measures for numerous wounded, but were not able to enter at first. When fire department paramedics requested to enter the station, the police had at least twice told them there were ‘no one injured’ and denied them access. Later, the police transported the wounded to other stations with reserved trains and took them to ambulances under their own evaluation. It took two and a half hours for the wounded to be sent to hospitals.

Online rumors say that people were beaten to death by the police in Prince Edward station, and the bodies were kept at the Kwong Wah Hospital mortuary. The police stated in a press conference on September 2 that it was not true. On the same day, Hospital Authority and Kwong Wah Hospital clarified no death cases related to the public assembly on August 31. In an inter-departmental press conference, Chief Secretary for Administration Cheung Kin-Chung stated that ‘those were all rumours’ and were ‘absolutely fictitious’. The police condemned people spreading hearsay with ill will. Skeptics maintained that the wounded could have died after being transported to other stations (especially Lai Chi Kok and Shek Kip Mei stations) or hospitals, and the dispute remains to this day.

Although the police and MTR Corporation denied deaths, they have no evidence to support their statement. After the incident, MTR had closed off Prince Edward station and refused to make surveillance tapes available. On the other hand, the fire department had provided contradicting numbers of injuries. They said there had been mistakes, but it was unconvincing. Netizens only wished the police and MTR Corporation could know the truth, yet the police still hid them. Another occurrence that led people to suspect a cover-up was that the MTR Corporation hired Taoist monks to hold a religious ceremony at Prince Edward station. It had shown a certain terror for the incident on the MTR’s side, that deaths at the station might be more than a rumor, meaning someone was actually beaten to death by the police from August 31 to September 1. It is a truth the government is terrified to let known since it risks the reputation of the police and their conflict with the Hong Kong people. This is why Chief Executive Carrie Lam refused an independent inquiry into the incident, which 80% of Hong Kong citizens demanded.

Locals at Prince Edward had set up a memorial site at Exit B1 of the MTR station, offering flowers and food for the deceased and gathering mourners. By then, in citizens’ minds, the police were as lowly as dogs. The relationship between the police and their people was gone, while other government departments renounced them. The Anti-Extradition Movement was escalating every day, and clashes with the police happened every night. Youngsters continued to reinforce the protest, and MTR facilities were being sabotaged. The police had lost their reputation as law enforcement, and citizens had lost trust in them. Police violence was out of control, and the government had failed to manage them. Hong Kong was facing a large-scale protest violent as war as if a falling city in modern times. There is nothing more to guarantee safety. Since the day the police beat citizens to death in an indiscriminate attack, citizens’ trust in the police has crumbled.。
