In protests, universities played an irreplaceable role as the base of operations in various strike actions rallied by Hong Kong protestors. Police sounded the drums of war in the morning by setting up blockades around Kowloon Tong and firing tear gas grenades at the campus and the dormitory of the City University of Hong Kong, the first time in Hong Kong's history.
On November 4th, 2019, Alex Chow Tsz-Lok, an undergraduate student of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, was chased and thrown off the ledge of a car park in Tseung Kwan O by the police. After four days of intense medical treatment, Alex was announced dead due to a cardiac arrest due to his injuries from the fall. In reaction to Alex's tragic demise, Hong Kong citizens launched "Operation Dawn," rallying strikes against labor, classes, and the trade market on November 12th.

Nov 12, hundreds of CUHK students protested near the CUHK campus in the black bloc. The protestors put up obstacles and barricades near the University Station and on the Tolo Highway to prevent police forces from entering the university. Conflict ensues after two parties met near the boundary of the university's area. Students rally and call CUHK is my home, they chant about corrupted cops and police brutality as they take an array of umbrellas and large litter as cover while keeping the police at bay with bricks and Molotov as throwables. Sundries all around campus were set alight, much like an old battleground dimly lit by signal fires.
The police mobilized the water cannon wagon as a last-ditch effort in hopes of gaining access to the campus right before their promised retreat at 1030PM, where they launched another round of bombardment with water cannons and tear gas grenades on the students. Even Professor Tuan was affected by the tear gas, forcing him to leave the campus. By 1 AM, the Special Tactical Contingent (The Raptors) surrounded the campus and continuously shot rubber baton rounds and tear gas grenades at the students and protestors on the bridge.
That night, Professor Rocky Tuan, the Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK, arrived at the campus to communicate with both the students and the police. He guaranteed that if the students don't engage the police with throwables such as Molotovs and bricks, they have no right to trespass on university property. The hours of peace were cut short by 730 PM, as the police once again shot tear gas grenades at the students. In retaliation, students and protestors threw Molotovs at the police, threatening to escalate the situation if students detained in the previous arrest were not released. By 10 PM, Professor Tuan had already asked for truce four times but was met with another round of tear gas bombardment by the police. After witnessing what the police unleashed on the once peaceful campus, the Vice-President, equipped with masks and eye protection was already in the ranks of the students. Joseph Sung, the previous Vice-Chancellor and President, also arrived at the campus, hoping the students would stop blocking the Tolo Highway so that this conflict could end sooner.

This battle at the CUHK campus caused 51 injuries, 40 of those are men, and 11 are women. Five of the arrested, including three CUHK students' bail bonds, were paid by former President Sung. Students and protestors evacuated from the campus that evening. Fourteen universities and community colleges' students' unions released statements condemning the police's anger-provoking violent behavior last night, expressing their will to stand with CUHK.

On November 16th, when strolling down Science Museum Road in Tsim Sha Tsui, barricades and obstacles made of bricks can be seen all over Chatham Road, achieving a total lockdown. The tension kept on rising around PolyU, as conflicts between the protestors and the police broke out all around the campus. Utilizing water cannons, armored vehicles, and tear gas grenades, the police launched multiple rounds of assault on the students and protestors, which retaliated with Molotovs and umbrellas. The conflicts escalated throughout the day. By 630PM, PolyU declared it an emergency and requested all staff members and students to evacuate the building. At night, an armored vehicle was set alight with the protestor's Molotovs. One of the tires of the water cannon wagon also caught on fire and was destroyed. The police also deployed sonic weapons, a potentially lethal weapon against the students and protestors. Surrounded by the police, protestors targeted the Cross-Harbour Tunnel's toll stations. The students and protestors were forced to retreat into the campus by midnight.
The conflicts at PolyU raised tension to the extreme. The police are even willing to use live rounds to detain all of the radicalized protestors. On the other hand, the protestors wish to sacrifice themselves if they can stand their ground. When the tensions are high, and the conflicts are constant, every soul in Hong Kong hoped the "owner" of the university, President Teng Jin-guang, would show up and mediate the situation. However, he was never seen on campus.Even worse, as the police wished to capture all of the protestors, they decided to lock down the campus, preventing outward communications and personnel from entering. Not only will the protestors potentially run into shortages of supplies, but the injured will also be unable to get proper medical care. An intervention from a neutral third party is desperately needed to prevent a humanitarian crisis. As the leader of PolyU, if the President did not play a role in resolving the situation, it would be disappointing. The dangerous situations at the PolyU campus attracted much-deserved attention among society. Most internet users advocated a rally to support protestors inside the campus, while some hoped President Teng would mediate the conflict on campus. Instead of helping students and protestors on campus, President Teng published a press release at 5 AM tomorrow, detailing his negotiations with the police. They promised to ease off the assault so the protestors can surrender themselves.
Former President of the Legislative Council Jasper Tsang, and Lawyer Eric Cheung, entering campus and communicating with the students and protestors wasn't as difficult and dangerous as President Teng and the police claimed. This also showed the influence that renowned individuals have over the situation. By accompanying the protestors, not only can you calm their uneased minds, but you can also mediate and resolve the conflict and potentially facilitate a peaceful ending. As the mentor to the younger generation, their responsibility in helping this resolve is essential. President Teng claimed since the start of the conflict, he has been communicating and negotiating with the police. Although this should be considered important or even necessary, citizens and police currently lack mutual trust based on previous events. Even if the police agreed to a plan, students need a trustworthy figure to accompany and protect them. Disappointingly, among those figures, President Teng, the university's head, was not one of them. As the President was nowhere to be seen, students had to hunker down within the campus, waiting for a breakthrough.

On the Monday after the election (November 25th), new members of the District council decided to visit PolyU in hopes of helping students and protestors escape. However, they failed to convince all of them to clear university property. Ten remaining students and protestors remained within PolyU until 29th, where the police decided to retreat and lifted the lockdown on PolyU. After 13 days of lockdown, PolyU once again found peace, and most of the students and protestors went back home.

The police also persuaded them to give up their defense, but around 1000 protestors refused the offer and resided within the PolyU campus.A portion of students and protestors escaped via rappelling and from underground sewage to avoid arrest and prosecution. Some were arrested when attempting to flee via the main gate; a small number of protestors even turned themselves to the police. However, the detained were not treated fairly. A reporter took a picture of the arrested protestors, where they were forced to board a train heading to the Huiyang Jail located in Guangdong. This inhumane and unlawful prosecution process calls for everyone's attention and concern. Those who require medical assistance were brought to the hospital by voluntary paramedics. After the great exodus of the PolyU, only a handful of tired and withered students and protestors remain on campus.
